reality #4: taking this journey alone is dangerous

Picture the scene with me…

A stunning mountain terrain. Snowcapped peaks reach towards the heavens in every direction. Crystal clear blue skies overhead.

Zoom in on a winding mountain road that leads to a log cabin tucked into the mountainside near a stream. A soft wisp of smoke rises gently from the chimney and evaporates into the crisp morning air.

Romantic, beautiful. And it’s not where you are heading to write your book. Am I wrong here?

That romantic notion of a writer escaping to an isolated mountainside cabin to write their manuscript is the stuff of Hallmark movies. The problem is that as we begin our journey, we tend to isolate ourselves.

And that is where the danger comes in. What if a bear breaks into your cabin and you are stuck fighting it off single-handedly? Just kidding.

Back here in the real world (our world), we are carving out time to write, squeezing it in wherever we can. We are working feverishly to get those words on the digital page. Sometimes it feels like we are fighting off a ravenous bear. And we rarely pick our heads up to see that we’ve become isolated.

The fact is, isolation will become a detour on your book journey because;

~You will lose your enthusiasm

~You will lose your energy

~You will lose your perspective

~You will lose your way

It’s often the point in a book journey when clients reach out to me for the first time. Help! I’ve gone off the road and I can’t get back on! To avoid this detour, you MUST find someone you feel comfortable with to use as a sounding board. Because it’s just that important.

Why is it dangerous to go it alone?

Danger #1 Your content will suffer

Some of the best writers on the planet use other people to help them build out their stories. A true master like Stephen King or JK Rowling may have their rhythm worked out so well they can produce stellar content unassisted. For the rest of us mere mortals, we need help. It’s the reason why I tapped my friend and book writing wizard, Derek Lewis, as my sounding board for this book project.

Speaking of Stephen King, think back to Reality #2 and the story about him throwing the beginning of Carrie in the trash. Here’s how that novel ended up being a best seller:

The next day, Tabby went to empty the trash in the laundry room and found three crinkled balls of paper. She reached in, brushed off a coat of cigarette ashes, and unwrinkled the pages. When King came home from work, she still had them.

“You’ve got something here,” she said. “I really think you do.” Over the next few weeks, Tabby guided her husband through the world of women, giving tips on how to mold the characters and the famous shower scene. Nine months later, King had polished off the final draft.

Without question, a second set of eyes (or another brain) is invaluable.
